Comparison of space weathering spectral changes induced by solar wind and micrometeoroid impacts using ion- and femtosecond-laser-irradiated olivine and pyroxene

Context. Space weathering is a process that changes the surface of airless planetary bodies. Prime space agents are solar wind irradiation and micrometeoroid bombardment. These processes alter reflectance spectra often modify their compositional diagnostic features. Aims. In this work we focused on simulating comparing spectral caused by bombardment to gain better understanding these individual processes. Methods. We used olivine pyroxene pellets as proxies for materials. To simulate hydrogen, helium, argon ions with energies from 5 40 keV fluences up 10 18 particles cm ?2 . femtosecond laser pulses. analysed corresponding evolution different parameters, which determined applying Modified Gaussian Model, also conducted principal component analysis. Results. The original mineralogy influences more than agent, seen diverse slope upon irradiation. in consistent observations A-type asteroids, while moderate no observed asteroid (4) Vesta. some differences effects induced two agents. Ions have smaller influence longer wavelengths impacts. This most likely due penetration depths Our results suggest instances it might be possible distinguish between contributions weathered surface.
